INDICATIONS

  • Nuclear Radiation Emergency: Helps prevent radioactive iodine from getting into the thyroid gland during a nuclear radiation emergency (Thyroshield®).

FDA APPROVED INDICATION

Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established for saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI®).

PRECAUTIONS

  • Cardiac: Use with caution in patients with cardiac disease.
  • Endocrine and Metabolic:
    • May cause overactive thyroid gland, underactive thyroid gland, or enlargement of thyroid gland (goiter). Newborns are more like to experience an underactive thyroid gland.
    • Prolonged use can lead to hypothyroidism.
    • Use with caution in patients with Addison’s disease or hyperthyroidism
    • Newborns are more like to experience an underactive thyroid gland.
  • Musculoskeletal:
    • Use with caution in patients with myotonia congenita.
  • Renal:
    • Use with caution in patients with renal function impairment.
  • Respiratory:
    • Use with caution in patients with tuberculosis or acute bronchitis.
  • Immunologic:
