MEDICAL INFORMATIONS

INDICATIONS

Comvax® is indicated for vaccination against invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b and against infection caused by all known subtypes of hepatitis B virus in infants 6 weeks to 15 months of age born to HBsAg-negative mothers. Comvax® should not be used in infants younger than 6 weeks of age.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Contraindicated in patients with a serious allergic reaction (eg, anaphylaxis) after a previous vaccine dose or to a component of the vaccine. Also contraindicated in infants less than 6 weeks of age (due to Hib component). Vaccination should be deferred in patients with moderate or severe acute illness, with or without fever. Immunocompromised patients may have a suboptimal response to the vaccine.

ADVERSE EFFECTS

Fever, irritability, somnolence, and injection site reactions (ie, local erythema, swelling, and tenderness) are common. Rare anaphylactic reactions (ie, hives, swelling of the mouth, hypotension, breathing difficulty, and shock) have been reported.

ADMINISTRATION

When giving multiple vaccines, use a separate syringe for each and give at different sites. Care should be taken to draw back on the plunger of the syringe before injection to be certain the needle is not in a blood vessel.

MONITORING

Observe injection site for local reactions.
